Plantronics Headsets and GN Netcom Headsets (Study)

Friday, September 21st, 2007

In a commissioned study, the firm of H.B. Maynard & Co. concluded that adding hands-free Plantronics headsets to conventional office telephones substantially improves productivity and overall call volume while reducing phone-related employee downtime and physical discomfort.

(The test was paid for by Plantronics and used Plantronics Headsets, but we have no reason to believe that the results would be different with another brand of high quality headsets.)

In the course of the study, more than 2,000 telephone transactions were observed and recorded on a time/motion basis at four firms over an eight-day study period. One-hand versus two-handed typing was also analyzed.

The data was then compared between users of Plantronics Quick Disconnect™ featured headsets and traditional telephone handsets.

Workgroups studied included inside salespeople, travel agents, technical sales support personnel and stockbrokers with previous headset experience.

The results were nothing short of remarkable. In fact, Plantronics-equipped workers showed an overall productivity increase of up to 43% over the control group.

Time spent in telephone related work activities was reduced substantially. Repeat calls were made without interruption, and ordinarily time-intensive tasks (such as typing or checking reference materials while on the phone) were performed far more quickly and efficiently with Plantronics headsets.

Not only was a reduced error rate and improved service record noted, but workers on the phone full-time with Plantronics Headsets placed an average of 16 more calls per day than those using traditional handsets.

Perhaps most telling of all, workers equipped with Plantronics headsets reported higher morale, lower fatigue levels and fewer phone-related physical complaints; after more than a week with Plantronics headsets, going back to bulky, cumbersome, hand-held phones was inconceivable.

While it’s possible to steer with one hand and hold a phone with the other, you’ll have more control of your car if you keep both hands on the steering wheel where they belong. And if one hand is on the wheel, while the other has to hold a phone, shift gears, adjust the radio, turn on the wipers, lower a window and hold a coffee cup…you’re heading for disaster.

More reasons to use a headset:

· The person you’re speaking to will hear you better because the microphone can be positioned nearer to your mouth with a headset than with the cellphone handset. You’ll hear better, too, with the receiver closer to, or even in, your ear.

· A headset’s noise canceling microphone will reduce the transmission of background noise from your car and outside traffic.

· You can save money by shortening calls, since there is less need for both people to repeat themselves.

· A headset will sound better than a car speakerphone, and costs less than a speakerphone.

Radiation Reduction Test Results

While extensive research studies have not yet been able to provide conclusive evidence of danger from the transmissions of cellular phones, if you are concerned about such danger, the use of a headset can reduce radiation significantly.

Headsets provide safe hands-free communication. Using GN Netcom Headsets with a mobile phone reduces radiation by at least 80%, compared to using a mobile phone without a GN Netcom headset.

This is the result of a test carried out by “Telelaboratoriet” at TeleDanmark, an internationally accredited testing facility for telecommunication equipment.

The test was conducted using three of our most popular mobile headsets and three different types of mobile phone. All trials showed that, when using GN Netcom Headsets, radiation was reduced by at least 80% and in some cases even up to 90%, compared to using any of the mobile phones without a headset.

A series of tests was performed in order to compare the relative difference in electromagnetic field strength levels at different carrier frequencies inside a human head simulator, using different types of GSM900 and DCS1800 mobile terminals operated alternatively in “handheld” mode and in “headset” mode.

The tests were carried out on Wednesday April 5, 2000 and used the following equipment:

Headsets: GN Netcom M2120, GN Netcom M2320 and GN Netcom M3120
Mobile phones: Nokia 6150, Ericsson A1018S and Motorola Timeport / Triband GSM/DCS Network simulator.

Human head simulator filled with 0.9% NaCl water solution with an inserted isotropic E-field probe to measure radiation (E-field strength)

Test configuration:

The measurements were performed inside the human head simulator with the probe just touching the wall of the head. The center of the probe was located at the center of the ear-channel of the human head simulator.

In handheld mode, the phones were located with the center of the earpiece matching the center of the ear-channel of the human head simulator.

In headset mode, the headsets were located with the ear-piece center matching the center of the ear-channel of the human head simulator.

Measurements were made in a RF anechoic room to simulate “field” conditions without any interference from other radio transmitters (including mobile phone transmitters) in the area.

GN Netcom engineers and manufactures products to the highest available industry standards for safety and performance such as: ETS 300 342-1, EN 50082-1, BABT 85/013, EN 60950, and UL 1459.

Results from a commissioned study conducted at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, CA, show strong evidence that office workers can reduce neck, shoulder and upper back muscle tension as much as 41% by using headsets.

(The test was paid for by Plantronics and used Plantronics headsets, but we have no reason to believe that the results would be different with another brand of high quality headsets.)

In the course of the three-month study, 62 people (33 women and 29 men), ranging from 20 to 63 years old, were involved in tests that evaluated the various levels of muscle tension resulting when office workers engage in other tasks while using the telephone.

Study participants were employed in a variety of professions, such as attorneys, reporters, and consultants, and occupations, including small business owners, sales and customer support, engineering and financial operations. Several held management and executive positions.

All of the subjects used the telephone a minimum of three hours a day to perform their jobs.

In the first half of the test, study participants were asked to use a conventional handset while performing a series of tasks. Tasks included reading, note-taking and typing on a computer.

In the second half, the participants exchanged the handset with a Plantronics headset, and repeated the series of tasks.

The results overwhelmingly favoured Plantronics headsets over handsets, providing the first scientific evidence that validates the physical benefits of headsets.

Neck and upper back muscle tension is one of the most common ailments of office workers today. This new evidence now confirms Plantronics headsets as a cost-effective, preventative solution for office workers.

The H.B. Maynard & Company study, also commissioned by Plantronics, first confirmed that headsets improve workplace efficiency and productivity as much as 43%. These new study results, combined with the results from the Maynard study, prove without a doubt, the benefits of headsets in today’s demanding work environment. Employers and employees alike will benefit from using headsets, from lower medical costs to happier, more productive workers.

Headset Express.ca Presents: The new age of Headsets
headsetss have been around since the early 1960’s, but most people are not aware of health hazards related to cradling the phone between your ear and shoulder. Long term telephone usage over the course of many years often leads to unhealthy telephone habits that could be impacting your physical health and safety.
Learning new telephone habits is the key.
According to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy in Britain, work-related neck and body pain results in an estimated 1.2 million working days lost every year. Many more people are visiting chiropractors and physiotherapists to alleviate the pain and correct the damage that bad ergonomics does to the human body. Using a telephone headsets will put your body into the correct ergonomic position.

Watch your productivity increase, and free your hands
Studies reveal that workplace efficiency and productivity is improved by up to 43% with the use of headsetss. Reduced error rates and improved service were also noted. Using headsetss frees your hands for other things, including computer use, taking notes, or even walking around in the case of wireless headsetss.
Relieve fatigue and improve energy levels
We all know that the use of headsetss reduces neck pain, fatigue, and headaches in subjects who simultaneously use the phone and computer. The time spent in awkward balancing acts on the phone is physically draining on our bodies.

If you still don’t believe us, listen to what others have to say.
As a chiropractor I treat numerous neck and shoulder injuries daily. During my educational workshops I highly recommend the use of headsetss. Noisy Headsets

Friday, September 21st, 2007

Some headsetss may not have adjustable volume controls and are set at high volume levels. In some workplaces the general office background noise levels can be very high and the volume for the headsetsexpress.ca/product_info.php?cPath=5_25&products_id=177″ title=”CS 50 USB Computer headsetss”>Headsets will be adjusted louder still. This is a problem as the levels of noise going into the ear from the headsetss can be higher than the first or second action level in the Control of Noise at Work Regulations. Therefore their continued use is likely to damage hearing over a period of time and is a breach of these regulations. It is known that industry standard headphones can and do breach the regulations. To avoid this employers should tackle the general noise levels in the office by using screens, booths etc. Employers should then require the manufacturers of headsetss to provide them with noise level details of their headsetss, and employers should choose accordingly.

Another noise phenomenon in Headsets is “acoustic shock”, where the wearer is exposed to short but very loud bursts of noise which can temporarily or permanently damage the wearer’s hearing. It is also reported as being very painful to receive. The CWU has over 80 compensation cases pending and BT has already paid out $93,000 to one worker. Some of the better headsetss now have acoustic shock protection built right in.

To prevent this occurring checks must be made on the system used before installation and regularly during use to ensure these peaks are not being broadcast. Workers should report all incidents in the accident book to ensure a true picture of the problem at the workplace is recorded and the statistics should be made available to safety reps and workers.

Noise limiters can be put on the system to deal with both the above problems. However, they must not be easy for the worker to disable, as in noisy offices there may be a need to go over safe limits. Again, tackle the noise at source and reduce office noise so the system does not have to be disabled.

Headsets For Call Centres

Friday, September 21st, 2007

Sometimes referred to as the modern equivalent of the industrial revolution’s “dark satanic mills”, many call centress aren’t dark and don’t look very menacing. But there are a whole range of occupational health and safety issues that need addressing in them to ensure the safety and health of those working there.

It is estimated that 1-1.7% of Canada’s workforce currently work in a call centres. A lot of the issues that arise have been addressed in previous articles. The following are some samples.

What’s a call centres? - call centress are where workers sit at computer terminals answering telephone calls about their employers business. They can be small or massive in size. They can be found in the public, private and privatized sector. Staff work their way through computer programmers to answer the callers questions, take orders, record details etc.

Pace of work - One of the biggest problems reported by call centres workers is the pace of work. Many, if not most, require workers to meet targeted numbers of calls, sometimes with absolutely no space between each call. Some centres have a screen showing the rate of calls being processed; can identify slower workers to their colleagues; have computer programmers which push for more work to be done by displaying messages on individual workers screens.

A forced pace of work can lead to stress, repetitive strain injuries, and other ill-health. Employers are legally required to provide a “safe system of work” so if the work makes people ill, it is unsafe and unions or staff reps should negotiate a safer pace of work.

Because of the repetitive and monotonous nature of the work, people have complained of “repetitive brain injury” or “zombiefication”.

Voice loss - call centres workers’ voices are under great pressure because of the nature of their work. Conditions affecting the voice (dysphonia) can be short or long term, some permanent. Workers should report all cases of discomfort or loss to the voice. Employers should provide liquid so staff can “wet their whistle” while working and the job should be designed so there are rest periods for the voice as well as other body parts (eg. arms to avoid RSI risk).

Angry customers - call centres staff are likely to have to endure customer complaints about the failures of their employer’s systems, be it service delivery, poor quality goods, wrong goods etc. Clients can become very agitated when things go wrong and dealing with this constantly can create stress for the worker, who is after all not responsible. Headset Express recommends employers recognize this as a problem and set systems in place so harassed staff can remove themselves from calls until they have been able to recuperate.

Sight disorders - Computer operators have reported such symptoms as soreness or dryness of the eyes, blurred vision, light sensitivity and headaches from working long hours in front of a VDU screen, referred to as computer vision syndrome. This requires the employer to provide regular eye tests, frequent breaks away from the screen, additional lighting where needed etc.

Rest and toilet breaks - Where workers are having to sit in one position all day at work, sometimes for many hours, they must be allowed breaks away from their workstation. Natural breaks like going to the toilet, refreshment or lunch breaks help but may not be enough. Some employers in this industry have resorted to bullying tactics over length of time for toilet breaks, all with the aim of keeping up productivity. Hazards magazine recently reported the range of ill-health conditions that can develop if people are not allowed to go to the toilet when they need to. The government’s advisory body HELA recommends call centres staff get breaks often and that they are not too short (see references below). All breaks should be negotiated and taken by employees.

Headsets - To enable workers to operate a computer and listen and talk to the callers at the same time, centre workers wear headsets. These come in all shapes and sizes but could be for both or just one ear and may sit outside the ear resting on the outer ear or plug into the actual ear hole itself. These present three main problems, suitability and comfort, noise levels and hygiene.

Suitable headsets - Whatever choice of headset is made they must be comfortable to wear over a working day, be light weight, they must be adjustable to fit the different sized heads and ears of those at work, must not restrain the movement of worker etc. Headset Express carries a full line of headsets from Nortel, Plantronics, GN Netcom and Viking.

Can I get ear infections from my headset?

Friday, September 21st, 2007

Yes. Call handlers wear a headset all day, every day. Your employer must ensure that it is fully adjustable, cleaned and checked regularly, repaired immediately, if necessary, and not shared. As the Initial Advice points out: ‘There is an increased risk of ear irritation and infection because headsets are worn so intensively.’

Pooling headsets should be avoided, as it leads to the risk of cross-infection

Unhygienic headsets: Some employers operate a pool of Headsets where workers put them in a box at the end of the day and pick any one out of there when they return to work. This system creates a serious risk of ear infections being passed around a workplace. Some ear infections can lead to serious hearing disorders.

Using Sani wipes from Headset Express will clean your headsets, reduce infections and help reduce downtime due to colds and flues. This Non Alcoholic wipe has an anti Bactria agent in it. Safe for all electronic equipment.

Physical Benefits of Using a Wireless Telephone Headset

Friday, September 22nd, 2006

The use of wireless headsets has increased significantly over the past several years. Whether you are operating a radio, and Ipod, a cellular phone, or just a standard telephone, there are great advantages to using them. First, they are convenient. The elimination of a cord allows you to move about freely, and the signal range is constantly increasing with advancements in technology.
Many business are even beginning to use them for various customer service positions that require employees to use the phone frequently. This allows both hands to be free so that representatives can enter the necessary information into the computer without the hindrance of a telephone receiver or the obstacle of unwanted cables. While these advantages are more for convenience, there are physical benefits of using a wireless telephone headset that can actually a significantly positive impact on one’s overall health.
In recent years, studies have shown that the use of certain wireless headsets has been shown to reduce muscle tension up to 41 percent when used with a telephone. This means that by not holding an actual telephone receiver, you are enabling freer movement of your head, neck, and even shoulders. It also frees both hands so that it is not necessary to hold the phone receiver between your head and shoulder, which significantly reduces muscle tension and allows longer job performance. This is especially important in today’s computer age where workers must often enter a wealth of information into a computer during numerous telephone calls that can last several minutes and are conducted many times throughout the day.

Using a wireless headsets for telephone work also deceases the strain placed on your hands that is caused from holding them in the same position for a long period of time. A wireless headsets, in particular, allows you to move about more freely, which makes it easier for you to type on a computer keyboard, then turn and consult paperwork without the hassle of a cord. It also allows you to get up from your desk and walk over to check files without having to put the caller on hold. This makes it easier to do your job seamlessly, and can help establish a better rapport with customers because there will be fewer interruptions. In addition, you aren’t stuck in the same position all day, and are able to stretch your arms and legs as needed. This alleviates all-around muscle tension, and promotes a better working environment.
